Tackling Corns & Calluses
Our Treatment Method
Our Specialist Podiatrists can safely trim or shave away the thickened skin by using a sterile scalpel or special tool. This process is called debridement and helps relieve pressure and pain instantly. Unlike at-home attempts, professional trimming is precise and reduces the risk of infection. While this is a simple and effective procedure, it does not address the root cause of the problem, so additional treatments may be necessary to prevent recurrence.
If a corn or callus is stubborn, we may prescribe stronger salicylic acid treatments than over-the-counter options. These help break down thick skin gradually. It is vital to moisturise with a foot cream containing Urea, regular moisturisers for the body often do not contain this. In our clinic we also stock Dermatonics Manuka Honey Heel Balm which is widely recognised. This heel balm is enriched with New Zealand Manuka Honey and contains 25% urea, effectively hydrating and drawing moisture into the skin. You can also purchase this heel balm from our online shop by clicking the link below.

If the corn or callus is caused by friction or pressure from footwear, we may recommend using padding, such as foam cushions, felt pads, or gel inserts, to reduce irritation. We may also suggest wearing properly fitting shoes with a wide toe box and cushioned insoles to prevent further rubbing.
Finding the cause
Further Investigation
At ChilternWellbeing we focus on finding the cause of the corn or callus formation in the first place. To do this we assess the Biomechanics of your feet (how effectively they move) and assess your Gait (walking pattern) using our Advanced FootScan Technology. This reveals any abnormalities in your foot function and can quantify how much pressure is occurring at any particular foot joint during walking.
Custom made orthotics can be made following a Gait Analysis to improve the way your feet work, reduce the destructive changes to the skin from deformities of the toes and redistribute the pressure away from the painful corn.
By addressing both the symptoms and underlying causes of corns and calluses, we can help ensure long-term relief and prevent future complications. If you’re experiencing persistent pain or discomfort, scheduling a visit with us is the best way to get effective treatment tailored to your specific needs.
