how do i book shockwave therapy
Getting started with Shockwave Therapy
The very first step in your shockwave therapy journey is to contact us to book in for an Initial Musculoskeletal Assessment with our MSK specialist Funmi. In this assessment she will take a full medical history including any existing conditions and medications taken. We will also conduct physical tests such as range of motion and a brief gait analysis. Functional tests will be performed which can include heel raises, hopping, squatting and a check of the length of the legs. After these tests have been carried out a treatment plan will then be created by your podiatrist. This could be to book in for a biomechanical gait analysis to assess the problem in greater detail or to book straight in for shockwave sessions. Your podiatrist may also recommend strengthening exercises and orthotic insoles as part of your treatment plan.
our shockwave sessions
Ground breaking technology
When you attend for your first Shockwave session with us your podiatrist will determine the exact area to be treated based on your symptoms and findings from your Initial musculoskeletal assessment. You will be positioned comfortably, either sitting or lying down, depending on the location of the area being treated. A special gel is then applied to the skin over the targeted area to help conduct the shockwaves more effectively. This ensures that the waves penetrate into the tissues without losing energy. We will then use a handheld device that delivers acoustic waves to the treatment area. The intensity and frequency of the shockwaves can be adjusted during the session based on your tolerance and the severity of the condition being treated. Shockwave treatment can feel mildly uncomfortable, often described as a tapping or pulsing sensation on the skin. The intensity of discomfort varies depending on the treatment area and your pain threshold. We typically start our sessions with lower intensity and increase it gradually as you adjust to the sensation.
after your shockwave sessions
What to expect following your shockwave sessions
After the session, it is normal to experience mild soreness or tenderness in the treated area, similar to what you might feel after a workout. This usually subsides within a day or two. Most patients can return to their normal activities immediately after the treatment, although strenuous activity or exercise may be limited for a day or two to allow the treated area to recover. Shockwave therapy is often done over a series of treatments, with sessions typically scheduled once a week or every few days. A standard course involves 3 sessions, though this varies based on the condition and its severity.
