Understanding Symptoms of fungal nails
The signs and symptoms to look out for
The symptoms of fungal nails can vary depending on the severity of the infection, but common signs to look out for include:
Discolouration
The nail may turn yellow, brown, or white. You may also notice spots or streaks of discoloration that start at the tip of the nail and spread toward the cuticle.
Thickened Nails
The affected nails become thicker than normal, making them harder to cut or manage.
Brittle, Crumbly, or Ragged Nails
The nail may become brittle and break or crumble easily. Pieces of the nail may also crack or split off.
Change in Nail Shape
As the fungal infection progresses, the nail may become distorted or misshapen. The natural curve of the nail may change, giving it an abnormal or uneven appearance.
Causes of fungal nails
Common causes of Nail Fungus
Dermatophytes are the most common cause of nail fungus, particularly a species known as Trichophyton rubrum. These fungi feed on keratin, the protein in nails, skin, and hair. Dermatophytes are responsible for other fungal conditions as well, such as athlete’s foot, which can spread to the nails. Yeast infections, like those caused by Candida, can also lead to fungal nails, especially in people with weakened immune systems or those who frequently have their feet in water. Fungi thrive in warm, damp conditions. So prolonged exposure to moist environments, like public swimming pools, locker rooms, showers, or communal baths, can increase the risk of fungal infections.
Failing to properly clean and dry your feet is a very common cause of fungal infections , especially between the toes which can promote fungal growth. Sharing personal items like nail clippers, shoes, or towels with someone who has a fungal infection can also rapidly spread the infection.
